Helen Catherine Cunningham 1922-2005
Helen C. Cunningham, 83, of Waukon, died Thursday, June 2, 2005, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. Funeral services were held Monday, June 6 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.
Helen Catherine was born on January 10, 1922, on her parents’ farm in Hanover Township, rural Waukon, the daughter of Willard and Anna Marie (Healy) Cunningham. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Hanover Catholic Church, attended Hanover No. 4 Elementary School, and graduated from Waukon High School in 1940. Helen worked for the Allamakee County Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Office for 25 years. Following retirement she did volunteer work for many years at the Senior Meal Site, Veterans Memorial Hospital, and St. Vincent De Paul.
Helen was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Veterans Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She enjoyed cooking, playing cards, and crocheting. Helen was an avid reader of books and newspapers so she could stay current with events around the world. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Cunningham of Waukon and Rita Schuster of Wheeling, Ill., and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Alice Cameron; and three brothers, Thomas, Earl, and Willard “Leo” Cunningham.
Casketbearers were Joe, Dan, and Colby Cunningham, John Schuster, Doug Evanoff, Virgil Johnson, and Fred Fossum.
