Lansing's Oldest Man Dies.
Mathias Gruber, nonagenarian, passed to eternal rest at his home near the Park, yesterday, (March 29, 1927) at 2:45 a.m., aged 95 years, one month and seven days.
Deceased was a native of Baden, Germany, born Feb. 22, 1832, and came to America in 1854, first settling in Ohio, then coming to Allamakee County, Iowa, in 1855, which has ever since been his home.
On July 2, 1859, he married Elizabeth Gruber, who preceded him in death October 14, 1900. He successfully operated some of the best farms in this and Lafayette township but retired about thirty years ago, making this city his home ever afterwards.
Mr. Gruber joined the Congregational Church in 1860 and was a man of character and integrity. He is survived by four sons, two daughters, twenty-three grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. The sons are: Julius of Minneapolis; Louis, Cannon Falls, Minn.; Ferdinand and Edward of Lansing, and the daughters, Mesdames Chris. Ista, of Hastings, Minn.; and H. W. Helming, of California. He enjoyed good health most of his life and was bedridden only since the holidays.
Funeral tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the German Presbyterian church, Rev. Bottom officiating in the absence of the regular pastor. Six of his grandsons, Leslie, Adolph, Clarence, Clifford, Harvey and Harold Gruber will be the pallbearers.
