Norbert K. Strong, 78, of Lansing died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse.

Norbert was born in Lansing on June 10, 1926, to Merl and Julia (Sparks) Strong.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war he re-enlisted and served with the military police in Germany.

He married Loretta Stahl on May 26, 1951, at the First Presbyterian Church in Lansing.

Norb was a river pilot for 32 years, the last 12 years of that for J.F. Brennan Marine in LaCrosse, where he retired from in 1983. He was a member of the Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge of Decorah, Iowa, and the Operators Engineers Local 139 of Pewaukee, Wis., and Gustav F. Kerdnt Post 5981 of the VFW. He loved gardening, feeding birds and being with the grandkids.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta Strong of Lansing; five children, Deborah (Neal) Steiber of Lansing, Patricia (Danny) Maust of Stoddard, Wis., Bruce (Barb) Strong of Lansing, Richard (Bonnie) Strong of Blue Grass, Iowa, and Laurie (Dan) Gavin of Dallas, Texas; nine grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; one great-grandson; one stepgranddaughter; and three siblings, Merlin (Alice) Strong of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Milton (Lorna Strong) of LaCrosse and Gladys Triggs of Waukon, Iowa.
