Gary Schafer, 65, formerly of Independence and Waterloo, Iowa, died Monday, May 15, 2006 at the Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, following a long illness.

Gary was born September 25, 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of George R. and Patsy (Habelitz) Schafer. He owned Schafer's Auto Trim in the Lansing area and Waukon area.

He is survived by a son Shawn, two stepsons: Steve and Jeff; his mother Patsy Ford of Sun City, California, a brother, Thomas Schafer of Independence, a sister; Diane Boeke of Grinnell, Iowa and a special friend, Michelle Troendle.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Schafer.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2006 at the Reiff Funeral Home and Crematory, Independence, with the Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
