Rita Elizabeth Hartong was born on September 5, 1907 on the rural Monona farm of her parents, Albert and Barbara (Suchanek) Lestina. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monona and attended rural Monona Schools.
On October 4, 1926 Rita married Irving Hartong at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monona. Together they farmed in Allamakee and Clayton Counties, spending much of the time in the Village Creek area. After Irving died in 1963, Rita worked for several years for the Waukon Greenhouse.
Rita was a member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church and its ladies organizations since 1952 and also a neighborhood club. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, houseplants, upholstery and was a good cook. She was also very handy with fixing things around the farm and home.
Rita died peacefully Sunday evening, April 13th at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 8 days.She is preceded by her parents, husband Irving, brother Ben, 2 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Surviving are daughters Vivian and husband Earl Iverson of Waterville, Bernadine and husband Emmet Jones of Lansing, Marjorie and husband Ronald Miller of Cedar Rapids and Barbara and husband Dennis Nebendahl of Waterville; a sister Alberta Berthoud of Moline, Il; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchildren.
