Joseph Kalke was born in Germany, June 25, 1845, and departed this life Sunday evening, at 7:30, August 16, 1906, aged 63 years, 1 month and 10 days.

The wife of his first marriage died 25 years ago and in 1903 the wife by second marriage died. Two years ago last January a young man about 23 years of age, a son, was called to his reward, since which time Mr. Kalke has been in failing health.

Mr. Kalke gave much of his early life to the service of his country, serving in the Bohemian war - 186? - and in the French war of 1870-71. shortly after this he came to this country and finally located in South Allamakee county, living about four and one half miles north-east of Watson, Iowa.

He leaves a large family of boys and girls to mourn his loss, the youngest child being 11 years of age.

Funeral services were held from the home at 10 a.m. Tuesday, to the Trappe cemetery, where was lain all that was mortal of Mr. Kalke, Rev. A.B. Fickle conducting the services. He was not rich in this world's goods, but was full of sympathy and kindness for great was his regard ad tenderness for his family.

page 5 - Joseph Kalke, an old settler in this neighborhood, died at his home at Sixteen, Sunday, Aug. 16th. Burial took place Tuesday, in Watson cemetery.

-Burial is Council Hill, which may have been known to some as the Watson cemetery or Trappe cemetery at the time of his death. The Council Hill cemetery is located just south of the Allamakee co. border in Clayton county, not far from Watson.
