Sgt. CHARLES C. LINDSEY - died 1968

Mr. and Mrs. Clark Lindsey received word Monday of the death of their son Charles C. Lindsey, 21, in an automobile accident near St. Leonard, Canada. Sgt. Lindsey, traveling alone, was returning to Loring Air Force Base, Maine, when the accident occurred about 6:50 a.m. Sgt. Lindsey had spent a year in Vietnam and would have served in the armed forces three years this November. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, at Community Presbyterian Church, with burial in the Postville Cemetery.

Funeral services were held for Charles Clark Lindsey in the Community Presbyterian Church, Postville, Iowa, on Friday, August 30, 1968 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Dick Harberts officiating and the Reverend Walter Martin assisting. Interment, with military rites, was in the Postville Cemetery. Casket bearers were his classmates from the Postville graduating Class of 1965, John Francis, Ronald Sander, Nile Zieman, Frank Hangartner, John "Jack" Oldag, and Dale Ellis. Schutte Funeral Service of Postville, Iowa handled the arrangements.

Charles "Chuck" Clark Lindsey, son of Clark and Edna (Hubbartt) Lindsey, was born April 9, 1947 in Kirksville, Missouri. He moved with his parents to Postville, Iowa in October of 1951. Charles received both his elementary and high school education in the Postville Community Schools. He was active in football, 4-H, scouting, and sang in the youth choirs of the Community Presbyterian Church. Charles made his confession of faith in Jesus Christ on December 13, 1959. He graduated from the Postville High School in May of 1965. Chuck began his military experience by enlisting in the United States Air Force on November 23, 1965. His basic training was at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He continued his training in December 1965 at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, Colorado, in March 1966, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, and in November 1966, he began his duty overseas at the Tan Son Nhut Air Force Base, Saigon, South Vietnam. He served there for one year and in November 1967, returned to Loring Air Force Base in Maine. From March 15 to May 15, 1968, he served temporary duty at Westover Air Force Base, Massachusetts.

On June 12, 1968, his engagement to Miss June L. Gilbert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gilbert of Campbelltown, New Brunswick, Canada was announced. Chuck and June planned to be married on October 5, 1968. However,upon returning to Loring Air Force Base on Monday, August 26, 1968, he met with tragic death when he was killed in a car accident near St.Leonard, New Brunswick in Canada. He reached the age of 21 years, four months and 17 days.

Charles Lindsey was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Emory F. Hubbartt, and paternal step-grandfather, Charles Miltenberger.

He is survived by his parents, Charles and Edna Lindsey, his sister, Sarah Kaye Lindsey, all of Postville, Iowa, his grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
