Joe Schultz Passes: Resided in Community For Over 80 Years
Joachim Schultz, 83, a pioneer resident of this community, passed away Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at his home in this city following a lingering illness. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in the home and at two o'clock in St. Paul's Lutheran church with the Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig officiating. Interment was in Postville cemetery.
Mr. Schultz was born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, September 25, 1861, the son of Joachim and Katerina Miller Schultz, and came to the United States when he was three years old. The family first made their home at Guttenberg. Mr. Schultz spent the greater part of his life in and around Postville. For several years he lived in the Hardin community and for about ten years near Castalia. He retired to Postville in 1920 and has made this city his home since.
He was united in marriage with Anna Harnack on October 30, 1885 by the late Rev. John Gass. To this union twelve children were born, of whom six preceded their father in death. Mr. and Mrs. Schultz observed their golden wedding anniversary on October 30, 1935.
He is survived by his wife, six children, John, Albert and Fred Postville; Edwin of Lansing; George of Ossian and Eldo of Monona; one brother, Henry of Castalia; 14 grandchildren, of whom one, Norman Schultz, is serving with the U. S. army in Europe, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were six children, Henry, Louis, Edna, Walter, Roy and an infant daughter; also five sisters, Mrs. Carl Miller, Mrs. Henry Heitman, Mrs. John Warnholz, Mrs. Christ Sander, Mrs. August Fischer.
Mr. Schultz was an active member of St. Paul's church.
