Dr. JUDSON WILLIAM MYERS

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville for Dr. J. W. Myers, 64, prominent Postville physician, who passed away at Postville Hospital on Wednesday, December 16, 1953. Rev. Walter T. Martin, pastor of the Community Church, officiated. Burial was in Postville cemetery.

Judson William Myers, son of Dr. William L. Myers and his wife, Anna, was born June 21, 1889, in Aurelia, Iowa. He moved to Sheldon with his family after one year where he attended both grade and high school. At the completion of his first year at Morningside college, in Sioux City, Dr. Myers attended three additional years and received his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Iowa. In 1917, after four years of study, he received his degree in medicine at the University of Iowa. After graduation, he returned to Sheldon, Iowa to join his father, Dr. William Myers, in the practice of medicine. Shortly after, he, his father and a brother, Dr. Lynn Myers, built and operated their own hospital.

In 1933, he with his family, moved to Postville and established a practice which continued up to the day of his death which occurred at the Postville Community Hospital, Wednesday, December 16, 1953.

He married the former Theresa Bowen of Iowa City, January 25, 1917. Three children, Robert, Patricia and Gretchen were born.

Dr. Myers was baptized in the Methodist Church in Sheldon. His membership was transferred to the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, April 6, 1950. He served as secretary of the O'Brian County Medical Association for many years and was also school physician in the Sheldon Public school. A veteran of World War I, he belonged to the Arthur F. Brandt Post of the American Legion. He was a member of the Kiwanis, the Elks, and also belonged to the Masonic Lodge. He was a Milwaukee Railway physician, and a member of the Postville Library board. In 1952, after 35 years of medical service, he was made a member of the American Academy of General Practitioners, a distinction which he valued most highly.

Dr. Myers was preceded in death by two sisters, Fern Myers and Margaret Nelson, and one brother Dr. Lynn Myers. Survivors include his widow, Theresa; a son, Dr. Robert L. Myers of Forest City, and two daughters, Patricia and Gretchen; one sister, Mrs. Leon Henderson of Middleton, Wisconsin; and two brothers, Loyal and E. B. Myers of Sheldon.

Many donations have been given in memory of Dr. Myers. The Hospital Auxiliary set aside the sum of $400.00 to purchase a new light for the operating room. A memorial wreath of $204.00, to be used for hospital equipment, was given by members of the community, the R. E. A. office and employees, and the Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204, A. F. and A. M. Some books will be placed in the Postville Public library in memory of Dr. Myers. A memorial book plate will be placed in each one.
