The people of Postville and vicinity were shocked and saddened on Friday last at a little after the noon hour when the word was passed about that R.V. Pearson, a highly respected resident of this city and a life-long resident of Post township, had suddenly passed away while conversing with members of his family in his home, and bringing to a close a long and useful life of nearly 77 years. Richard Victor Pearson, son of George and Marie Weber Pearson, was born at Garnavillo, Iowa, on February 22, 1861, where he lived until about the age of five years, when he came with his parents to a farm near Hardin, Iowa, where for many years he was the mainstay of his parents in the conduct of the farm. On February 22, 1886, he was united in marriage to Miss Alice Smith, and to this union five children were born, Mrs. Coral Jones of Lawler, Mrs. Nettie Coon of McGregor, Mrs. Lillian Christofferson of Ossian, Lloyd and Leonard of Postville. All his life, with the exception of the past two years, have been spent on the farm at Hardin and he has always taken an active part in the affairs of that community. At an early age he joined the Methodist church of which he has always been a faithful and hard working member. It was largely through the efforts of Mr. Pearson and his wife that the little church at Hardin kept up until the last struggling years of its existence. At the age of 26 years he became affiliated with Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204, A.F & A.M. of postville, and remained a faithful member until his demise. Two years ago failing health caused him to give up the activities of farm life and he and his wife moved to Postville to spend their remaining years. And on January 14th he was suddenly stricken with a heart atack and passed peacefully away at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 22 days. He leaves to mourn his passing his widow and children, one great-grandchild, his aged step-mother, Mrs. Julia Pearson of this city, four sisters and one brother: Mrs. Georgia Sawdey of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Jessie Ernst of Postville; Mrs. Mattie Dunning of Alva, Oklahoma; Mrs. Kathryn Evans of Pueblo, Colorado; and Chester of Postville. Five sisters have preceded him in death. He also leaves many other relatives and a host of friends by whom he will be greatly missed. The funeral service was held from the Postville Community Presbyterian church at two o'clock on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Frank Schepple of LaMotte and the Masonic fraternity, Bro. Leon DeNoylles of Cresco officiating for the local lodge. The [illegible] Postville cemetery.
