Mathew Rafter died at his home in Harpers Ferry, Saturday, February 3rd at the age of ninety-three years. He was born in Sligo, Ireland, in 1819. He visited in California as an Argonaut in early days, but returned to Paint Rock and farmed there for some years, then moved to Harpers Ferry where he resided until his demise. Decedent was a hard working man, quiet and unassuming, a good neighbor and citizen. He was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Miss Catherine McCabe in 1856. Besides his widow, one son John of Wabasha, Minn. and five daughters, Mrs. Barbaras, Mrs. Nicholson, Mrs. Hawes, and the Misses Anne and Alice, at home, mourn the death of a loving husband and father. Burial took place on the 5th in the cemetery of St. Joseph's Church, Rev. Sheehan officiating. The children were all present at the funeral. Thus passeth the remants of the pioneer phalanx of the early 50's.
