On Monday morning last, Mr. Jones Barnes, of Linton township, Allamakee county, was instantly killed by the wheels of a loaded wagon passing over his neck. It seems that he had started to Monona with a load of wood, and while descending a hill near his own home the wood slipped forward upon the horses, causing them to become frightened, when they ran, throwing the unfortunate man under the wheels.

The deceased was one of the earliest settlers of that section, and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was worthy of the esteem of all men, for he was a good, kind neighbor, an honest Christian gentleman. There are few Jones Barnes. He was honest in the broadest sense of that term, and the world has use for such men.

Mr. Barnes was a native of Kentucky, we believe, having come west at an early day, settling in the home where he spent his last hours. He was about 55 years old.

He leaves a wife and four children whose grief cannot be measured by mere words. They have the earnest sympathy of a whole community of people, who mourn with them a loss which is irreparable.
