FATAL ACCIDENT

In the newspaper article there was a picture of the accident. Below is the caption beneath the picture:

This picture was taken shortly after the accident that took place at 9:30 a.m. last Tuesday, April 21, about 2.3 miles southeast of Postville on Highway 18. William F. Schlee of Postville was fatally injured in the accident. According to the Clayton County Sheriff's report the pickup driven by Schlee was struck in the passenger side by the front of the semi. Schlee was ejected from his vehicle, and was dead at the scene. The driver of the semi, Lee A. Pulda of Prairie du Chien, Wis., was transferred to the hospital, treated and released. The report states that Schlee turned left into the path of the Pulda semi without yielding. The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol and the Clayton County Sheriff Department.

Funeral services for William F. Schlee were held Friday, April 24, 1992 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. The Rev. Charles W. Miller officiated. Kenneth Timmerman was the soloist, accompanied by Joann Martins, organist. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Casket bearers were Jeff Schlee, Chris Schlee, Mike Anderson, Joel Timmerman, Dave Anderson, and Dwight Bacon.

William Frederick Walter Schlee, son of Edward William and Mary (Meyer) Schlee, was born May 7, 1928 in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, Postville, Iowa. He died Tuesday, April 21, 1992. He had reached the age of 63 years, 11 months and 13 days.

He was baptized May 27, 1928 by the Rev. E. T. Finck and confirmed July 19, 1942 by the Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Bill attended the Postville School.

On November 19, 1949 he was married to Amelia Marie Adrian at Cresco, Iowa by the Rev. Robert R. Ahrens. To this union six children were born. They farmed on the family farm south of Postville until 1989, when they moved to their present home.

Bill was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Mary Schlee; and two brothers-in-law, Rueben Baethke and Milton Anderson.

Surviving are his wife, Marie; his children, Mary Ann and her husband, Darrel Crawford of Postville, Connie and her husband, Rick Farrington of Belton, MO, Barbara Anderson of Constantine, MI, Laurie and her husband, Sam Curnow of Chanhassen, MN, Billy Schlee and his wife, Karla of Postville, and Timothy Schlee and his wife, Annette of Ankeny, IA; 12 grandchildren, Stacy and Christopher Crawford, Matthew and Jennifer Farrington, Steve and Kimberly Anderson, Karie, Kendall and Kory Curnow, and Jeremy, Jordan and Brooke Schlee; 2 brothers, James and his wife, Eunice, and Richard and his wife, Norma, all of Postville; 3 sisters, Betty Anderson of Waukon, IA, Charlotte Baethke of Cresco, IA and Mary and her husband, Kenneth Timmerman of Castalia; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
