Oliver Earl Hale
Hale - At the residence of his sister Mrs. George Joslyn, in Anamosa, Io., Oct. 29, 1889, of pneumonia, after short illness of three days, Oliver Earle Hale, aged 71 years, months, and days. [sic]

Mr. Hale was born in Broom county N. Y., in 1818, in [sic] afterwards lived Delaware county, and came west to Chicago in 1835, and afterwards to Linn county, Io. He went from there to Belvedere, Ill., where in the year 1845 he was married to Miss Rhoda Ann Munson, who survives him. In 1851 he came to Allamakee county and engaged in the mercantile business at Lansing until in 1853 he established a store a few miles northwest of where Waukon is now, at the place so long know as Hale's Corners, and several years transacted a flourishing business, remaining there till 1866, and his home has been in the county most of the time since.

He was well and favorably known and highly respected for many years by a large portion of the people of the county as a public spirited citizen, and did much as a pioneer for the development of resources of this section. He was a kind husband and father. In early years he was member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and in later years was a Universalist, and died as a christian in the confident hope of a blessed immortality.

He left Waukon about three weeks ago to visit his brother Peter L. Hale in East Dubuque, Ill., and the family of his sister Mrs. Joslyn in Anamosa, where he was taken sick. The remains were brought to Waukon, and the funeral held at the Methodist church last Friday, the services conducted by Pastor McKee. His brother Peter of East Dubuque, and nephew Adelbert Munson, of Bailey, Io., were present at the funeral.

He leaves a wife and two daughters, Mrs. A. B. Conner, and Mrs. A. E. Goodykoontz, of Waukon, and other near relatives to mourn his loss.

So again is one taken from the ranks of the Early Pioneers, sturdy, wholesoled, [sic] active men who laid the foundation of civilation [sic] and prosperity a grand patrimony for the present and rising generation; a class of people whose memory will long be cherished and honored.
