Styers, age 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who passed away on Friday, September 30, 2016 at Mercy Hallmar were held on Tuesday, October 5, 2016 at the All Saints Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids with the Rev. John R. Flaherty officiating. Burial was in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Therese Kathleen, was the daughter of Thomas C. Cavanaugh and Alberta (Melavin) Cavanaugh. She was born on August 12, 1927 in Harpers Ferry, Iowa. She grew up in Harpers Ferry and graduated from the Harpers Ferry High School. After her graduation she went to Waterloo, Iowa where she worked in the offices of the Rath Packing Plant. Her older brother, Father Joseph H. Cavanaugh worked in the theology department at Notre Dame University and had become friends with a student named Jim Styers. He introduced Therese to Jim. Later the two were joined in marriage at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry on August 17, 1948. They settled in South Bend, Indiana while Jim completed his education at Notre Dame. Therese became a stay at home mother and began raising their family of six children. In 1955 they settled in Cedar Rapids where they became lifelong members of All Saints Church. She was diligent in raising their six children, working in her garden with her beautiful flowers and taking care of her many varied pets.
Therese always gave of herself for the care of others including many years of volunteering at Mercy Medical Center. She was a volunteer at Cancer Survivors and delivered meals for Meals on Wheels. She was an active member of a bridge group with lifelong friends. In addition she was an active member of All Saints Prayer Group, St. Ann's Circle and she thoroughly enjoyed the relationships she developed with the ladies from her Joy Group. Therese and Jim enjoyed their many travels together. She always had a ready ear and compassion for anyone in need of a friend.
Therese is survived by her children: Cecelia Trujillo and Tom (Frances) Styers, both of Stockton, California, Anne (Karlos) Armstrong of Marion, Iowa, Mary Styers of San Diego, California, and Laurie (Larry) Fox of Tacoma, Washington; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and her sister Cecelia Horn of Marion, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Jim Styers, and her son Joe Styers; her parents; her brother, Paul Cavanaugh, and sisters Betty Ohm, Jean Cavanaugh, and Maureen Brown; her half-sibings Mary Irene O'Brien, Rev. Joseph H. Cavanaugh, Patricia Delphey, Michael Cavanaugh, Sister Joan Marie Cavanaugh, and Mary M.Cavanaugh who died in infancy. The things that were most important to her were her family and friends, her faith, and her church. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
