Obituary—Fred Meierkord
Frederick Christian Meierkord was born May 16, 1852, in Kalldorf, Lippe Detmold, Germany. He received his religious instruction at Langenhlzhausen and was there confirmed by Rev. l. Kricke. In 1869 he came to the United States and joined his sister, Mrs. Conrad Helming, who had arrived the year before, and the following year his mother, with the remaining family, also came and they lived together in Sheboygan, Wis., where many of the relatives still reside.
The family came to Allamakee county in 1874 and made their home here. Only one sister, Mrs. C. Helming, and a brother, Simon, are still living, Mrs. Denne, Mrs. Sander and Mrs. Nagel having gone to their eternal rest.
He was united in marriage with Miss Wilhelmina Helming in 1884. Three children blessed their home, but two died in infancy, an only son, Frederick, Jr. survives, with his mother. One little grandson, John Meierkord, and many relatives and friends mourn the departure of the loved one.
Mr. Meierkord resided on his farm west of this city until twelve years ago, when he moved to this city. He was a faithful member of Zion Reformed church and was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the church. He will be greatly missed in these circles and it will be hard to replace him.
After many weeks of suffering he passed to his reward at 11:45 o’clock April 8, ages 67 years, 10 months and 23 days. The funeral services were held in the Reformed church Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock with interment in Oakland cemetery.
