Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 3, 1972, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran church for John A. Schroeder, who died Monday, Jan. 31, at the Good Samaritan Center. The Rev. Norman Ullestad and the Rev. Frederick Ludwig, D. D. of Milwaukee, Wis., officiated. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.
John Adam Schroeder, son of Fred Schroeder and Louisa Overbeck Schroeder, was born Feb. 6, 1880 in Grand Meadow township. He was baptized May 16, 1880 and confirmed April 17, 1895. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran church.
He was married to Amanda Oldag March 4, 1909. Three children were born to this union. They farmed south of Postville and moved to town in 1931.
Mr. Schroeder led an active life in the Postville community. In 1907 he served as director and treasurer of the Grand Meadow township school. He became a director of the Farmers Store in 1918 and served on the board and also in the capacity of vice president and president for a total of 44 years. In 1915 he was elected to the Creamery board of directors, where he served for 39 years.
He became a director of the Citizens State Bank in 1935, serving as chairman of the board in 1958 and resigning the presidency in 1967. He was director and president of the Postville Telephone Company and was a member of the town council for 12 years.
He was a council member of St. Paul Lutheran church for four years and was on the building committee for the remodeling of the Sanctuary and a co-chairman of the parsonage building committee. He was a past member of the Commercial Club and Oddfellows. In 1967 he was made an honorary member of the Citizens State Bank board and in 1962 an honorary member of the Farmers Store board.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Amanda; an infant daughter; one grandson; and three sisters.
He is survived by one son, Lloyd, Postville; one daughter, Violet (Mrs. Warren Jollymore) of Grosse Pointe, Mich.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Alma (Mrs. Albert Gulsvig) Postville; Maggie (Mrs. Ed Knodt) Rosemount, Minn.; and Miss Louise Schroeder, Cedar Rapids.
