Daniel Edmund Regan, 75, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in Veterans Memorial Hospital following complications in leukemia. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, by the Rev. Monsignor Ed Lechtenberg. Burial, with military graveside rites: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Martin Funeral Home, Waukon, where a Scripture service begins at 7 p.m.
Daniel Edmund Regan was born July 31, 1923, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Daniel J. and Kathry Waters Regan. He attended St. Patrick's Elementary School and graduated from Waukon High School. In January 1941, he enlisted in the Navy as a pharmacist's mate and transferred to the Fleet Marine Force before World War II. He served with the 9th Marines-Third Marine Division and saw combat at Bougainville and Guam. In 1994, he was amony the honorees at the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Guam and deactivation of the 9th Marines at Asan Beach, Guam. Following the was he attended the University of Iowa and graduated from the College of Pharmacy at Drake University in Des Moines in 1952. On May 3, 1947, he married Jacquelyn Wheat in Waukon. He worked at Sullivan's Drug Store in Waukon for a time before opening Regan's Pharmacy in 1956, remaining active there for over 30 years.
He was a longtime chairman of the board of trustees of Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, a former member of the Allamakee County Draft Board, a charter member of the VFW post in Waukon, a member of the Third Marine Division Association, Drake University Alumni Association, American Pharmacy Association, Iowa Pharmacy Association (serving as honorary president in 1994) and the Waukon Chamber of Commerce, which named him person of the year in 1999. Dan enjoyed golfing, fishing, travel and veterans' reunions. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and enjoyed spending several of the past wintrs with Jac in Rockport, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Jacquelyn,; his two sons, Stephen and wife Marianne of Elkader and Michael of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Tim, Dana, Sarah and Jennifer Regan; four sisters, Lorraine Lyons, Joan and husband Dick Takin and Charlotte and husband Reg O'Malley, all of Waterloo, and Lavon and husband Leo Cunningham of Waukon; and his brother, Donald and wife Susan of Omaha.
