Prominent Paint Rock Woman Dies
Mrs. J.J. Houlihan, pioneer and highly respected resident of Taylor Township, died at her home three miles west of Paint Rock, early Monday morning April 9. Mrs. Houlihan was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Slattery, early settlers of Cherry Mound.

She was born in Galena, Illinois, 73 years ago. On February 5, 1885 she was united in marriage to James Houlihan, one of Taylor Township's most energetic young men. Immediately after their marriage they located on the farm which has been her home to the time of her death. Her husband preceded her in death in February 1925.

The funeral of Mrs. Houlihan was held from St. Joseph's church Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock and was one of the largest ever attended at Paint Rock. Relatives and friends represented many localities, Dubuque, Madison, Wis., Waukon, Lansing, Cherry Mound, Wexford and Harpers Ferry. While the old parish of Paint Rock and vicinity was represented by a general outpouring of Catholics and non-Catholics.

A Solemn Requiem High Mass was celebrated by her pastor, Fr. Costello, with Fr. O'Sullivan of Wexford and Fr. Nolan of Decorah as the deacon and sub-deacon. An impressive sermon was preached by Fr. Nolan, her former pastor, and the merited tribute it carried to the great Christian character of Mrs. Houlihan touched the hearts of the congregation that filled old St. Joseph's to its capacity.

Three children, B.A. Houlihan, Nellie and Statla, who reside at the old home, survive her and gave her every care and comfort that dutiful children could bestow upon their affectionate mother. She is survived by two brothers, Tom and James Slattery of Cherry Mound; also three grandchildren, James, son of B.A. Houlihan, who is attending the Sisters school at Waukon; Richard and Keath, sons of the late Emett Houlihan of Madison, Wis. Four children preceded her in death, Mamie, John, Emmett and Leonard.

Burial was made in the family lot at Paint Rock.
