Former state representative and New Albin civic leader, John C. Mendenhall, 72, New Albin, died Monday, Oct. 18, in his home.
He was born Jan. 20, 1904, in Ponca, NE, to Ivan and Lena (Mulle) Mendenhall. He married Margareta Leyh on June 29, 1940 in Sumner, IA.
He graduated from business college in Sioux City, IA. He came to New Albin in 1926 where he owned and operated the Mendenhall Lumber Company until he retired in 1966.
He was state representative for six years. He was mayor and council member. He was chairman of the Aging Commission of six Iowa counties, He was chairman of the Allamakee County Aging Commission. He was director of the Ace Telephone Company, and director of New Albin Savings Bank. He was on the board of directors,and chairman of the bylaws of Camp Winnebago.
He was active in church affairs. he was a 50 year member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge, Lansing. He was recently appointed to the New Albin library board.
Survivors are his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Francis (Phyllis) Ward of Fort Wayne, IN; a son, Milo of Indianola, IN; two brothers, Lloyd of Ventura, CA, and Albert of Kern City, CA; three sisters, Mrs. Ethel Severance of Ponca, NE, Mrs. Harold (Mina) Schulenberger of Sioux City, IA, and Fern of Ponca, NE; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a wife, Mira, and an infant son.
Serves are at 2 p.m. Thursday in Grace United Methodist Church, New Albin, with Rev. John Hall officiating and assisted by Rev. Frances Jones and Rev. Kent Weaver. Burial will be in New Albin Cemetery.
Friends may call at the New Albin Chapel after 2 p.m. Wednesday, and in the church from 1 p.m. until the services. Potter-Haugen Funeral Home, Caledonia, MN, is in charge of arrangements.
