Howard W. Schlitter, 89, of Waterville, died Friday, October 31, 2003, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, November 3 at St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry, with Fr. Louis Trzil officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements. Howard William Schlitter was born June 27, 1914, on the rural Monona, Iowa, farm of his parents, William and Laura (Hensel) Schlitter. He attended the area rural schools and started working for neighboring farmers. On January 28, 1942, he married Hazel Young in Kahoka, Mo. A few months later, he joined the U.S. Army where he served as a Corporal until his discharge in December of 1945. Following the service, Howard and Hazel farmed near Monona and on Irish Ridge until settling on Hazel's family's home farm near Waterville in 1954. In addition to farming, Howard worked for Holland Brothers Construction of Decorah for several years.
He was a member of St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church, the Waterville Senior Citizens, the Waukon VFW Post, and the Harpers Ferry American Legion Post. Howard was an avid gardener and gave his beds immaculate care. He was also a good mechanic around the farm with machinery and cars. He enjoyed playing cards and bingo, visiting with neighbors and friends, raising chickens, and fishing. Survivors include his wife Hazel of Waterville; two daughters, Bonnie (Bob) Natz of Janesville, Wis., and Barb (Chuck) Weipert of Waterville; two sons, Bob (Ginny) Schlitter of Waterville and Bill Schlitter of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey and Robert (Ruth) Schlitter, both of Allison, Iowa; and three sisters, Alice Palas of Dubuque, Adeline McFarlane of Madison, Wis., and Florence Pozel of Monona. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Verna Chalders; two brothers, Dayton and Alfred; four half-brothers, Fred, Floyd, Herb, and Lester; and a half-sister, Elsie Kutzbach. Casketbearers were Bob Heffern, Jerry and Jim Egan, Kevin Schlitter, Chuck Weipert, and Bob Natz.
