DIED, at his home in this place Saturday morning, the 31st ult., James A. Melvin, aged – years. Deceased had been ailing for some months, but his condition was not considered dangerous, and no physician was called until the day previous to his death.

He was granted a pension about two years ago, and lived with his two boys in the building known as the Lansing House, which he bought some time ago.

He belonged to Co. E, 2d Minn. Inf., and was buried with military honors, Hemenway Post, G.A.R., having the funeral arrangements in charge.

Deceased resided for several years on Portland Prairie, Minn., removing from there to Lansing some fifteen years ago. The remains were interred in Oak Hill cemetery Sunday afternoon. The boys have been taken in charge by their mother, residing in LaCrosse. A daughter residing in Prairie du Chien was present at the funeral.

Note: Allamakee co. Death Records and his Civil War pension both give his first name as Joseph.
