Lansing, Ia., Nov. 22 - Relatives here have received word of the death at Fort Dodge Monday of George Thornthe (sic), a former Lansing resident. Funeral services were held there Wednesday.

He is survived by one son, Leonard, Minneapolis; three daughters, Mrs. George Gordon, Lansing; Mr. Aagot Sivenson (sic), New York City, and Miss Genette, Fort Dodge.

Mr. Thornthe was married twice. His first wife and one son are buried n Oak Hill cemetery here, while the body of his second wife is interred in Fort Dodge. Another son died during the war and was buried at sea.

This obituary was typed exactly as printed in the newspaper, but the name is incorrect and there are other errors in the obituary.

The transcriber spent a couple hours researching for a man named George Thornthe and was not able to find anyone by that name in Iowa on census records.

However, census and other records for Gilbert J. Thomte and family, are abundant, placing him in both Lansing and Fort Dodge from 1880-1930.

Daughter Isabelle's marriage to George Gordon occurred on 03/28/1904 in Lansing.

Son Leonard married Alice Ytreli in Waukon, Oct 1904. The 1930 census enumerates them in Hennepin co. MN.

Daughter Aagot married Reinhold Swenson in Dec. 1917, and is buried in Story co. Iowa. The obit erroneously names her as "Mr. Aagot Sivenson"

Son Newman / N.J./ John Newman is enumerated on the 1900 census with his father in Lansing. Newspaper articles from Fort Dodge, ca1910, mention a mill accident where N.J. Thomte is suing due to injuries. This may be the "son buried in Oak Hill". I was not able to find more.

Son Casper, who died of the flu during WWI, gave his birthplace as Lansing on his WWI draft registration card but was working in Sioux co. IA at the time of registering. The American Battle Monuments website records his burial in the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, France, Plot B, Row 31, Grave 26.

Daughter Genette is living with her father per census records in Lansing & Fort Dodge.

Mr. Thomte's wives were:
1st - Gumel/Gunhild Schack (various spellings of both first & maiden names) who died prior to 1900. She is buried in Oak Hill cemetery.
2nd - Martha Hansen Gilbertson, who was instantly killed (1918) when she fell down the cellar steps at her home in Ft. Dodge. She is buried in St. Olaf's cemetery, Fort Dodge, with Gilbert and Genette.

The dates on G.J. Thomte's gravestone in St. Olafs cemetery are 1847-1930.
