Although in ill health for several years news of the death of Mrs. Martin Ryan of Union Prairie township came as a shock to her relatives and friends, she having been as well as usual until two days before her death which occurred Saturday (Sep 19, 1942). Her daughter and husband Mr. and Mrs. Perry Queal of Los Angeles, returned to their home Thursday after an enjoyable visit with her, not realizing that her long and useful life was so nearly ended.
As Mary Christensen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Christensen, she was born in Winneshiek county October 13, 1869 and was nearing her 73rd birthday. The year of her birth her parents moved to Allamakee, where she grew to womanhood.
Her marriage to Martin Ryan occurred on April 9, 1893 and they established their home on the farm in Union Prairie where her death occurred.
Their family consisted of five sons and three daughters, three of the sons, Carl, Sidney and Emmett having preceded her in death. Those who survive to mourn her passing are Mrs. Perry Queal, Los Angeles; Mrs. Donald Bender, South Bend, Ind; Harold, Merriam, Kansas; Mildred and Leonard at home. There are six grandchildren. The bereaved ones have the deep sympathy of friends in their sorrow.
Funeral Services were held yesterday afternoon at St. John’s Lutheran church conducted by the Rev. P. F. Kjorlaug. Burial was in the family lot in Oakland cemetery beside her husband who died in 1929. Those who served as pall bearers were Willard Cunningham, Will Weber, Arthur Marsden, Fred Hancock, John Mc Aneny and Joseph Dixon.
