Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 29 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, for Lawrence C. Welzel, who died October 26 in Community Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Conrad Simonson officiated. Interment was in Postville Cemetery.
Lawrence, the son of John P. and Emma Schultz Welzel, was born December 6, 1887 on the home farm in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county. He was baptized October 10, 1888 and confirmed in 1902 in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville.
He received his education in the local school. February 22, 1911 he was married to Alma Knodt at the home of her parents in Perham, Minnesota by Lutheran Pastor Groh. Twin daughters were born to this union.
The Welzels farmed on the home farm until 1937 when they moved to Postville.
Mr. Welzel was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council for nearly 16 years. He was president of the church from 1944-45 and chairman of the building committee that completed the remodeling of the church. He was also a member of the Turner Society, active in Clayton County Farm Bureau serving as township director and was honored a few years ago as a 50-year member.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Morene, a brother, Carl and two sisters, Amanda and Bertha. Also, two grandsons, Joseph and Thomas Heins and a great-granddaughter Jody Voss.
Survivors include his wife Alma, a daughter, Irene, three grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
