Postville Graphic, Thur., 22 Dec. 1898.
Truman Stoddard was born in Bennington county, Vermont, October 27, 1819, and died in Lodi, Cal., December 4th, 1898, being 79 years, 1 month and 7 days old.
His mother died when he was a young boy and he was early in life cast upon his own resources. As a consequence he received very little of school training, yet he acquired by glint of application and experience sufficient learning to be able to carry on business. In business he was successful, and laid by enough to constitute a competency. He was married to his first wife April 7th, 1847, in the state of Illinois, and came to Iowa in 1855. They lived happily together till her death in June, 1892. Two children, a son and daughter, were born to them. The son died in his youth. Mr. Stoddard went to California in 1875 and has lived in Lodi ever since. He was united in marriage to his now bereaved companion, February 15th, 1893, at Sacramento. Both wives were sisters of our townsman, A. R. Prescott. Mr. Stoddard was a man of great energy and willpower. Disease got hold on his vigorous body and for weeks he resisted its inroads, but only gradually to give way in the unequal contest. He retained his mental powers to within a few hours of the last. During his illness he arrange his business affairs preparatory to their passing into the hands of others. He leaves a widow, a daughter, a granddaughter, with other relatives and friends to mourn his departure. He was a kind husband and a loving father.
