Waukon, Ia., Feb 11 - Captain John H. Hale, 93, the oldest business man in Waukon, both as to his age and as to years of business activity, died Tuesday forenoon at his home on Allamakee street.

Mr. Hale was born in Glastonbury, Conn., Sept. 26, 1838, and when 18 years of age came to Galena, Ill., and from there to St. Anthony Falls, now a part of the Twin Cities, where he began work with an engineering crew in which he worked for some years.

As soon as the Civil war broke out he enlisted as a private in the 13th Michigan engineering corps and saw service throughout the war emerging as a Captain. He was wounded in the knee at the battle of Shiloh.

In 1865, at the close of the war, he came to Waukon where he engaged in business with Jenkins and Townsend. Later the first became Hale and Jenkins and later Hale and Sons, which name has remained unchanged although three grandsons of the deceased are now associated in the business. Although not taking an active part in the business of the store, he continued to visit it up to the time of his last illness.

Mr. Hale was married Feb. 22, 1864, to Miss Henrietta Heustis, and to them three children were born, two sons surviving the father, William and Charles, both of Waukon. He was preceded in death by his wife and one daughter.

Waukon, Ia., Feb. 13 - Captain John H. Hale, 93, engineer, veteran of the Civil war and Waukon capitalist, died Tuesday and was buried Friday at Waukon.

As a young man he was a railroad surveyor in the early days of railroad building in eastern Iowa and Minnesota. In '61 he enlisted as a private in company D, 13th Michigan volunteer infantry, and served until the close of the war, rising to the rank of captain and acting major. He was wounded at the battle of Chickamaugua.

After the war, Captain Hale went into business at Waukon, founding the store which is now operated by his sons and grandsons under the name of Hale & Sons, one of the largest department stores in north-eastern Iowa.
