Marjorie Duggan Lane Gazlay, 88, of Waukon, Iowa, died Thursday at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 26 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie Duggan was born June 4, 1917 in Waukon, Iowa, the daughter of Dennis and Edith (Yeager) Duggan. She graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Waukon and attended Waukon Junior College and the University of Iowa where she studied dietetics.

In December of 1937 she married Claude Lane in a ceremony performed in an airplane flying over Dubuque, Iowa. Claude died in 1944.

October 30, 1948, she married William Soaper Gazlay Jr. in Owensboro, Ky. He was a civil engineer, they moved often following his career, living from various times in Kentucky, Virginia, Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, New York, and finally Tennessee, where they retired in 1963.

William died in 1981 and Marjorie stayed in the Nashville area until moving to Waukon in 1999.

Throughout her life Marjorie was a dedicated mother and homemaker. She served as a den mother when her sons were involved with the Cub Scouts and belonged to various PTA associations in the places they lived. Her life was filled with volunteer service, most notably as a Gray Lady with the American Red Cross where she helped at the Veterans Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, and at Clover Bottom Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. Her efforts were recognized by being named Woman of the Day when she lived in Nashville. Marjorie also played the drums and horn in a Senior Citizens group in Nashville that performed at area nursing homes.

When not tending to the needs of her family or the concerns of her volunteer causes, she enjoyed trout fishing, playing cards, and working crossword puzzles. Some of her favorite times were annual extended summer trips to Waukon with her sons when they were younger.

Survivors include her four sons, Larry Gazlay of Atlanta, Ga., Gary (Helen) Lane of Weekiwachee, Fla., Kent (Diane) Lane, of Bokeelia, Fla., and Bill (Debbie) Gazlay of Dunwoody, Ga.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Harriet Duggan and Faye Gluck, both of Waukon and Virginia Chapman of Willmington, Del.

She was preceeded in death by her parents; her husbands Claude Lane and William Gazlay; and a brother, Clare Duggan.

Casketbearers were Gary Lane, Bill Gazlay, Bob Wellendorf, Paul Howes, Lance Maly, and Perry Norton.
