Postville, Ia. - Funeral services for George J. Meier, 65, were held from the Schutte Funeral Home to St. Bridget's Church Thursday morning. The Rev. Francis J. Vallaster celebrated the requiem mass. Mr. Meier died Monday in Postville Hospital where he had been a patient for several weeks.
Born at National on March 9, 1879, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Meier, he came with his parents to a farm near Postville in 1882. The family later moved to Postville where he attended high school. His parents later moved to Farmersburg, where he was employed in his father's furniture store. When the family returned to Postville, Mr. Meier's father purchased the Skelton and Tangeman general store, the grocery department of which the deceased purchased in 1917, operating it since that time.
Mr. Meier was married to Christine Sheehy on April 29, 1914, who with their two children, George Jr., and Betty Ann, survives. Other survivors are three sisters, Mrs. F.L. Eaton, of Bellflower, Calif., Mrs. A.J. Phillips, and Miss Irene Meier, both of Postville. He was preceded in death by two brothers and his parents.

Succeeded His Father In Grocery Store in 1917
George J. Meier who had been (here the paper is torn and crumbled) ________ in the business and civic affairs of Postville over a long term of years, passed away Monday morning at Postville hospital where he had been a patient for the past several weeks. He was 65 years old. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock in St. Bridget's Catholic church, the Rev. Francis J. Vallaster officiating.
George John Meier was born at National March 9, 1879, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Meier. With his parents he came to the farm 4 1/2 miles northeast of Postville in 1882, where he spent his boyhood. Later the family moved to Postville where he attended high school. His parents later moved to Farmersburg and Mr. Meier worked for his father in the furniture store in that place.
When the family returned to Postville Mr. Meier's father bought the Skelton & Tangeman general store, located at the same place the present Meier store is situated. In March 1917 Mr. Meier purchased the grocery department of his father's store and he has operated it since that time.
On April 29, 1914, Mr. Meier was married to Miss Christine Sheehy, who with their two children, George, Jr., and Betty Ann, survive. He is also survived by three sisters, Louise, Mrs. F. L. Eaton, of Bellflower, Calif., Amanda, Mrs. A. J. Phillips, and Miss Irene Meier of this city. Two brothers, Chris and Wilbur, preceded him in death as did also his parents.
Mr. Meier always took an active interest in the business, civic and social life of the community. He was a charter member of the Postville Commercial Club.
