Milton A. Somermeyer, 85, of New Albin, died Friday, August 22, 2003, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Memorial services were held Monday, August 25 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in New Albin, with Rev. William Reese officiating. Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery, New Albin. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements. Milton August Somermeyer was born on April 17, 1918, in Aberdeen, S.D., the son of Otto and Elsie (Arndt) Somermeyer. When Milton was very young, he and his family moved to the New Albin area. Milton attended English Bench elementary school and farmed with his family. On July 23, 1942, he married Gertrude Bechtel at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Milton worked for Roverud Construction Company in Spring Grove, Minn., as an Operating Engineer Local 49 until he retired in 1980. He was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ and served on the city council for New Albin. Milton enjoyed dancing and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Somermeyer of New Albin; two sons, Donald (Susan) Sommermeyer of New Albin and Fr. Gary Sommermeyer of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; and two grandsons, Eric and Jon Sommermeyer. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Rowland, Robert and Orville Somermeyer; and a sister Bernice Fritz.
