August F. Schlitter was born near Hamburg in Germany on November 23, 1847. He died at the age of 83 years, 2 months and 6 days.

He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in his youth while still in Germany which according to his own testimony was a long hard task. Evidence of the fact that the work was done thoroughly in that he was still able at a ripe old age to repeat from memory many of the passages he learned so long ago.

Mr. Schlitter was married while in Germany, his wife dying two years after their marriage. To this union was born one son. Later in June of 1880 at the age of 33 he and his 3 year old son, one step-son and step-daughter left the homeland and embarked for the land of promise to America. He came directly to Iowa, Allamakee County. One year after his arrival he purchased 40 acres of land and began to clear it immediately. In 1890 he bought 40 more acres of land and in 1894 another 40 making a farm of 120 acres which he worked successfully for many years.

Mr. Schlitter has had the good fortune of being strong and healthy all his life. Sickness and physical misfortune never knocked at his door until about five weeks ago. On December 27th he accidentally fell out of bed and fractured the bones in both hips and leg, which necessitated him being moved to the McGregor hospital. In addition he contracted a cold and later pneumonia which finally caused his death on January 30, 1931.

He is survived by one brother Charlie Schlitter of Chicago, Illinois, one son Charlie of Monona, one step-daughter, Mrs. Ferdinand Kuester of Monona and one step-son, Gustav Timrich
of Charles City, Iowa. Eight step-grandchildren as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at Watson on February 2, 1931. Burial was at the Council Hill Cemetery. Rev. R.W. Berg officiating.

NOTE OF THE TRANSCRIBER: The obituary listed the surname of Mrs. Kuester and her brother Gustav as Timrich, however, it has also been shown as Timmerick in several other sources (including the Council Hill Cemetery records).
