Contributor: Connie Ellis (Schlitter researcher)William Schlitter, son of Adolph and Caroline Schlitter, was born in Linton Township, Allamakee County, Iowa on November 5, 1875 and passed from this life on Sunday afternoon July 2, 1939 at 3:45 p.m. having attained the age of 63 years, 7 months and 27 days.
On September 27, 1900 Mr. Schlitter was married to Emma Jarms which was blessed with six children - five of whom survive their father and one died in infancy. Mrs. Emma Schlitter departed this life on April 7, 1911. The five surviving children are Mrs. Henry Kutzbach of Farmersburg, Fred and Herbert Schlitter of Waukon, and Floyd and Lester Schlitter of Monona.
On February 28, 1912 Mr. Schlitter married Laura Hensel and to this union nine children were born, all of whom remain to mourn the departure of their father. These children are Verna, Howard, Dayton, Florence, Adeline, Harvey, Alfred, Robert, and Alice, all of whom have been living at home to carry on the work there except two of the boys who have been working out. Besides these children and his wife, Mrs. Laura Schlitter, William leaves behind him twelve grandchildren. In addition to these mourners there are five brothers, Herman, Theodore, Albert, John and Emil Schlitter, and two sisters, Mrs. Martin Franck and Mrs. Emma Fett who survive him. One sister, Mrs. Charley Topel preceded him in death. Not only members of his family and relatives but friends of the neighborhood and community mourn his passing and extend their sincere sympathy to the wife, children, and relatives left behind.
Throughout his entire life Mr. Schlitter had lived and worked at the farm home northeast of Monona. For the past year and a half he had been unable to do his work but was not always confined to his bed but able to be up and around the house bearing his suffering courageously. Now he rests at ease and May God Grant peace unto his soul.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday July 5, 1939 at 10:00 a.m. at the house and at 10:30 in the Pilgrim Evangelical Church. Six sons of the deceased acted as pallbearers, Fred, Herbert, Floyd, Lester, Howard, and Dayton. Music at the church service was rendered by a quartet composed of Miss Elizabeth Debes, Mrs. William Marfilius, Mr. Harvey and Harry Debes with Mrs. Ross at the piano. Rev. Harvey W. Raduege of the Evangelical Church officiated at the services with C.G. Schultz as funeral director.
