Elgin Echo, Thursday, 20 August 1903.

Little Lloyd Luhman, of Postville, met with a fatal accident while returning home from the M.E. Sunday school picnic last week Tuesday. Lloyd in company with four other lads were riding in a single buggy in the center of a caravan of teams. When part way home he decided to count the teams in the rear and stood up, one foot resting on the step of the rig and holding to the bones of the top with his hands. Of a sudden his foot slipped from the step and his leg slipped through the spokes of the wheel, loosening his hand hold and throwing him to the ground, causing a compound fracture of the leg between the knee and ankle. Medical assistance was summoned and the boy was taken to his home where the broken member was restored to place and a gaping wound closed with about a dozen stitches. Blood poisoning set in and he died Friday.

Fatal Accident at Postville.

Review:—While returning from the M. E. Sunday school picnic at Hecker’s grove on Tuesday evening, about 5:30 o’clock, Lloyd, the ten-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Luhman, of this city, was the victim of a most sorry accident which by the most extreme good fortune did not terminate fatally. Lloyd in company with four other boys of about his years was coming home from a day of enraptured glee, all in a single rig, occupying a place about midway in the caravan of teams. When a little way the other side of Wallace Martln’s, Lloyd, boylike, concluded to count the number of teams bringing up the rear. To do this he stood up in the rig with his back toward the horse, clinging to the bows of the top with his hands, with his right foot outside the box on the step. Of a sudden his foot slipepd{sp} off the step and his leg slipped through the spokes of the fo{r}ward wheel, loosening his hand hold and throwing him to the ground, causing a compound fracture of the right leg between the knee and ankle, the bare bones tearing thru the flesh and protruding thro’ his stocking. It was indeed a pitiable sight to see the little fellow in the road on his hands and knees, refusing to allow anyone to touch him until the doctor came, and when his mother arrived on the scene, feeling as only a mother can when she sees one of her own flesh and blood in suffering, the little fellow looked up and said, "Mama, be brave, I'm trying to be; I’ll be all right again."

In spite of all that could be done the little fellow died of blood poisoning last Friday morning.
