The sudden death of James F. Clancy occurred early Sunday morning at his home on Front Street, following a heart attack which came upon him shortly after retiring. He had been at his place of business all evening and came home about midnight from his tavern, eating a light lunch before going to bed. It was a great shock to family and friends and many long time acquaintances will read with regret of his sudden passing.
Deceased was born Dec. 17th, 1870, a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Clancy, of Lansing, early pioneer residents. He was educated in the Sisters School and on June 17th, 1901 was married to Miss Violet Daines, who with nine children will mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. One daughter, Rose, Mrs. Hugh Walker, of Dubuque, his parents, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. M.A. Miller, Mrs. Roy Erickson, of Chicago; Mrs. Cletus Betsinger, Mrs. George Baker and Miss Alice Clancy, Lansing; four sons, Donald and James Jr., San Francisco, Calif.; George, Wecma, Oregon and Walter, Lansing. Other immediate survivors include his sisters, Mrs. Mayme Carroll and Miss Nelle, of Lansing, and a brother Wm. of Petuluma, Calif., besides 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
His early youth was spent on the river in the busy days where he steamboated for 5 years or so. He later went to work in the livery barn where for 15 years he became widely known as a competent driver and courteous employ. He drove a bus for several years following the advent of cars and Jim's popularity became synonymous with the city of Lansing. For the past several years he has operated a tavern on lower Main Street. He was a member of te B.P.O.E., Decorah and members of that organization will attend the last service.
The funeral is scheduled for tomorrow morning at Immaculate Conception Church, Lansing, at 9:30 with Father Henry Scharphoff offering the Mass of Requiem. Burial will be in Gethsemane and pall bearers will be Will Saam, Walter Aschom, Harold Gaunitz, Henry Wagner, Mike Gavin and Donald Wolfe. Among the out of town relatives attending the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Miller and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Erickson and son James, Chicago; Donald and James Clancy Jr., San Francisco, Calif.; George of Wecma, Oregon; Mrs. Peter Schnitzler and Mrs. Clarence Carroll, Gary, Ind.; Mrs. Lillian Daines, Ludington, Mich; and Mrs. Pearl Malotte, Muskegon, Mich.
