Intelligence of the death of Miss Hortense E. Abbott, which occurred at her home, 1419 Dearborn Street, Chicago, on the morning of March 26, 1921, brought sorrow to the hearts of her many friends in Postville, where she has been so long known and so dearly loved.

The A. P. Abbott family removed from New York to Postville and were known here as among the early settlers of this place. Their farm adjoined the village and is now known as the Lull addition to same. This was the family home for many years, and here Mr. Abbott died in October, 1901, after which time Mrs. Abbott and Hortense made their home in Des Moines and later Chicago, where Mrs. Abbott passed away in March 1917, leaving Hortense quite alone in the world; her only sister, Emma, having died in Postville in 1871 at the age of five years.

In the Postville home, Nellie, as she was called, past her childhood days and attended the public school. Here too, under the guidance of her mother and local instructors she early began the study of music, which she mastered as an art, being well prepared for a successful career in Her chosen profession. She studied in the Academy of Music at Dubuque, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music in London, England. It was in Queen's Hall, London, where Miss Abbott received a medal of Honor presented her by the Countess of Rador in behalf of the Royal Academy of Music.

Miss Abbott taught music at various times in Postville, at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, and the State Normal School at Montgomery, Alabama. In Des Moines and Chicago, where she last taught, she maintained a private studio. She studied and taught both voice culture and the piano, the former being her preference. The sweetness and delicacy of her voice was early recognized and under training developed a richness, a fullness and a variety of tone which was delightful to hear.

Miss Abbott was a member of the Congregational church and later became interested in Christian Science. She was also a member of the D.A.R. organization.

Funeral services were held in Chicago and the remains shipped to Postville, accompanied by Mr. Roberts, whose daughter and Miss Abbott were special friends. Services in Postville were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Shepherd, conducted by Rev. Saathoff. Interment in the family lot in Postville cemetery.
