Lydia Minerva Cowles was born December 10, 1849, on Sauk Prairie, Sauk county, Wisconsin, which was her home until the fall of 1870, when she moved with her parents to Hardin, Iowa, and lived there until the spring of 1878, since which time Postville has been her home.
At the age of fourteen years she joined the Methodist Episcopal church of Sauk Prairie and continued a member of that church until the union of the Methodist Episcopal and the Congregational churches of Postville to form the Community Presbyterian church, when she joined as a charter member.
On March 9, 1885, she was married to L.D.B. Hawkins*, who preceded her in death April 11, 1928.
She was one of nine children and is survived by a sister, Mrs. Jennie McAdam of Poter, Neb., and by a brother, Eddie P. Cowles of Postville.
She was a faithful daughter, sister and wife, and to do her part in these relationships she was well content.
She passed away at her home in Postville, Tuesday morning, June 16, 1931. She was ready and eager to go on to meet the many loved ones and friends who had preceded her and she leaves her blessing and good wishes for those who remain to mourn her departure.
The funeral was held from the Community church in Postville on Thursday afternoon last at two o'clock, the Rev. R.F. Galloway officiating, and the large company of sympathizing and sorrowing friends in attendance, as well as the numerous beautiful floral offerings, all were evidence of the large place she held in the hearts of a community that had been her home for more than a half century.
Interment was made in the family plot in Postville cemetery.

Lorenzo "Dan" Hawkins is not correct. I went to his obituary on the Allamakee site, and again it is listed as "Dan". However, his complete name was Lorenzo Dow Blodgett Hawkins
DOW was a family name.
