Geo. S. Tuttle Passes at Oddfellows Home
A message received here Monday morning by Fred J. Miller, secretary of Postville Lodge N. 707, I.O.O.F. conveyed the sorry news of the passing at the Odd Fellows Home at Mason City of Geo. S. Tuttle, a member of the local lodge, who had been in a critical condition of health at the Home hospital for some months past.
At the time of his passing George was aged 74 years, eight months and two days. The greater portion of Mr. Tuttle's life had been spent in this vicinity, where he enjoyed a wide acquaintance, and by his genial and friendly ways drew about him a wide circle of friends. Though handicapped physically from his youth up, he did not despair, but equipped himself with an education and for a number of years in the long ago he was a successful teacher in the rural schools of this locality.
Later he engaged in the insurance business for a time. He also clerked for a time in the clothing store of Joe Gray, was a laundry agent, in the real estate business, and served for many years as secretary of the Postville school board and the Post township board of trustees, and being a fine penman his records in these offices were marvels of neatness and correctness.
He was also for a time manager and owner of Postville's only picture theatre, in the operation of which he was quite successful. And he also used to assist about the Herald office on press days with the folding of the newspapers, which he performed with the same exactness that marked the various occupations in which he engaged. He was never idle for long, as he liked work and lots of it. And now that his life has closed the lesson it left behind is a challenge to the young manhood of today in what may be accomplished even under what may appear to be the most adverse circumstances.
Funeral services for Mr. Tuttle were held at the Odd Fellows Home, where he had been a member of that great fraternal family for some years past, on Tuesday afternoon, F.J. Miller, A.C. Webster, G.A. Brooks and J.P. Ellis of the local lodge and long time friends of deceased, going up to attend the same.
Following the funeral at the Home, the body was shipped to Postville, arriving here in Tuesday night's train, and this morning at ten o'clock funeral services were held at the Schutte funeral parlor in Postville, conducted by Rev. R.F. Galloway and the Odd Fellows fraternity, at the conclusion of which the remains were escorted to the Grand Meadow cemetery, not far distant from his boyhood home, for interment.
So far as we know, Mr. Tuttle is survived by no member of his immediate family, or other close relatives, but he will long be remembered for his many good qualities of head and heart by a wide circle of friends.

~Note: The 1925 Iowa State census gives his birthplace as Pennsylvania, and his parents as John & Loretta (Range) Tuttle. The 1870 US census enumerates 8 y/o George S. Tuttle in the household of Charles & Loretta Sonnkalb in Grand Meadow twp. Clayton county. No relationship is given although appearances are that Mrs. Sonnkalb is his mother Loretta Range Tuttle.
