Howard Bergeson

Howard Bergeson, 79, of Waukon, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon as a result of cancer.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 7 p.m. scripture service.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church in rural Dorchester, with Rev. Arndt Braaten officiating.

Casket bearers are Greg, Bruce, Mark and Charles Palmer and Almo and Craig Bergeson. Honorary casket bearers are Ozzie Quandahl, Norman and Silas Vongroven, Sander Swenson and Dale Droivold.

Burial with military graveside rites will be in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Howard Orval Bergeson was born March 31, 1921 in Spring Grove, Minn., the son of Almer and Olga (Horgen) Bergeson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church and attended Waterloo Ridge rural school and Spring Grove High School.

He farmed with his parents until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942, where he was an electrical and radio technician and saw duty on the USS Anteitam and also in Kodiak, Ark.

In 1948 he returned to work his parents' farm until 1965 when he moved to Bothell, Wash. There he worked for a short time for Boeing before starting a job as custodian for Northshore School District.

On July 6, 1984 he married Barbara (Quandahl) Palmer at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. They returned to Washington where he continued working for the school until retiring in 1988 and moving back to Waukon.

Howard was a member of Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church, a Life Member of American Legion through the Spring Grove Post, and the Allamakee County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed gardening and planting trees, feeding and watching the birds, fishing, collecting antiques, and going to sales.

Survivors of Howard Bergeson include his wife, Barbara of Waukon, a sister, Delores (John) Higgason of Alexandria, Va., a brother, Almo (Virginia) Bergeson of Columbia Falls, Mont., 5 step daughters: Roberta (Steve) Cunningham and Katherine (Todd) Cahoon, both of Monona, Rebecca (Al) Bailey of Rowan, Iowa; Barbara Lee Palmer of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and Mary (Robert) Davis of McGregor; and 4 step sons: Greg (Marlene) Palmer, Bruce (Janet) Palmer, and Mark (Debra) Palmer, all of Waukon; and Charles (Rena) Palmer of Rapid City, S. D.; 25 step grandchildren; 4 step great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Carles Melius Bergeson.
