Marian Straate
Marian B. Straate, daughter of Paul A. and Clara (Snitker) Hesse, was born October 11, 1925 on her parents Ludlow Township farm. She died July 2, 1995 at Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis. She was 69 years old.
She attended rural Ludlow Township, Allamakee County Schools and also attended beautician school in Dubuque.
On January 28, 1948 she was married to Herbert F. Straate at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon.
She was a lifetime area resident, who was very involved with family and church activities. She farmed with Herb in Union Prairie Township for 30 years. They had lived in Waukon since 1977. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and was an active member of the church's ladies groups. She was also a volunteer at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Her interest included raising flowers, friendships, being a good organizer, and with her husband she liked fishing, shooting, traveling, polka dancing, bowling and following and encouraging her family in their activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Herbert, who died in 1992. She is survived by 3 sons, Lee (Christine) Straate of Brookfield, Wis., Larry (Nancy) Straate Waukon, Mark Straate of Birmingham, Alabama; a daughter, Dianne Blankenship of LaCrosse, Wis., 3 brothers, Roger and LaVonne Hesse of Waukon, Ronald and Shirley Hesse of Postville, Orville Hesse and friend, Shirley, of Waukon; a sister, Ruby Teslow of Decorah and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 6, 1995 at Zion United Church of Christ with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Casket bearers were Jerry Olson, Calvin Snitker, John O'Hara, Dave Meier, Randy Hesse and Jeff Teslow. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.
