Leon Carl Blumhagen, 78, of Postville, Iowa died Saturday, March 23, 2013 in Gold Canyon, Arizona. He was born September 28, 1934 in Winneshiek County near Ossian, Iowa to Carl Henry and Esther Ida (Bugenhagen) Blumhagen. Leon was baptized on October 21, 1934 and confirmed on March 21, 1948 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. He graduated from Postville High School in 1952.

Leon was united in marriage with Jane Anne Panncke on August 29, 1954 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. To this union four children were born, Alan, Anne, Audrey and Adrian. Leon and his family farmed his entire life southeast of Postville, where he retired from dairy farming in 1980. Leon joined the Iowa National Guard in Oelwein after high school and spent nine years as a drilling member in addition to farming. He also drove school bus for Postville Schools for eleven years, drove for local car dealers; Postville Ford, Decorah Auto Center, and Sut Hill, for many years, and was a certified snowmobile instructor.

Leon was an active lifetime member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church where he was on the property committee and served as an usher for many, many years. He was also a member of Farm Bureau. He enjoyed tractor rides, stock car racing, snowmobiling, camping, traveling, and all of his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. He especially enjoyed his winters in Arizona, four wheeling and hiking.

Leon is survived by his wife, Jane of fifty-eight years; his four children, Alan (Uncha) Blumhagen of Tomah, Wisconsin, Anne Gill of Atlanta, Georgia, Audrey (Mike) Tschirgi of Monona and Adrian Blumhagen of Orange Park, Florida; three grandchildren, Nick (Tasha) Henkes, Cody (Morgan) Henkes and Caymon Blumhagen; a step-grandchild, James Tschirgi and a great-grandchild, Bentley Henkes.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be Friday, March 29, 2013 from 4-8 P.M. at the Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Funeral Services will be at 11 am on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa with Rev. Steve Brackett as the officiant.

Burial will follow at the Postville Cemetery, Postville, Iowa.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, Iowa is helping the family with the arrangements.
