FATAL RUNAWAY ACCIDENT.

Fred Lammert, living on the old Eldridge Noble farm, about three miles northwest of this city, was the victim of a runaway accident Tuesday evening that resulted in his death the following afternoon. It seems he had been in town during the afternoon and at a little after seven o'clock in the evening started homeward with his team. At about eight o'clock that evening the team came home without either a rig or driver. Mr. Lammert's sons put the team in the barn and started toward town in search for their father, whom they found lying by the roadside in an unconcious condition near the brow of the hill just north of the Louis Heins place. Pieces of the buggy strewn along the way was proof conclusive that the team had run away and thrown him out.

The boys took their father home and called in medical assistance, and an examination proved that the neck had been dislocated, he probably having struck on his head when thrown from the rig. All that was possible was done for the unfortunate man, but he died shortly after noon on Wednesday without regaining consciousness.

Fred Lammert was normally an honest, industrious and kind hearted man, who enjoyed the respect of a large circle of friends. At the time of his death he was past forty-eight years of age, and he leaves a wife and four children almost struck dumb with the great grief they were called on so suddenly and unexpectedly to bear. The sympathy of all is with those that mourn.

The funeral will be held from the home next Sunday at half past ten o'clock and from the Lutheran church at 11:15 a.m.

Fred Lammert was born in Grebs, Germany, June 15, 1860, and died at his home near Postville, Iowa, at two o'clock p.m., Wednesday, March 30, 1910, aged 49 years, nine months and fifteen days.

His death was caused by a fatal runaway accident, as recorded in this paper last week. Many stories have been told, but God alone knows just how it happened, therefore we say with the Master: "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged; condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned; forgive and ye shall be forgiven" and "He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone." We who witnessed his death prayed "O, God, be merciful to him, a sinner."

In 1882 he came to America, settling first near Garnavillo, and later near Postville. His first wife died, and he again married to Wilhemina Lendt. To this union were born five children, four of whom are living. He is survived by his wife, four children, his old father, and a brother. May the God of all comfort, comfort them.

The funeral was held from the Lutheran church in this city last Sunday forenoon, conducted by Rev. R. Kuehne. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
