Postville Review, Sat., 17 Oct. 1896. (condensed).
Arvilla Austin was born in Whitehall, Washington Co., N.Y., Aug. 13th, 1824, and died in Allamakee Co., Iowa, Oct. 11th, 1896, aged 72 years, 1 month and 28 days.
At an early day with her widowed mother she came to Chicago, Ill., while there were yet more indians there than white people. In 1835 they settled in Dupage Co., Ill., where June 24th, 1840, she was united in marriage to Mr. Isaac Brainard. From Dupage Co. they moved to McHenry Co., Ill., and in 1855 with a family of three children they came to Allamakee Co., Iowa, where the remainder of her life was spent. There was born to them in all six children, five sons and one daughter. The husband, two sons and the daughter preceded her to the land of spirits. Amos T. S. died in the service of his country at Stone River, Tenn., Jan. 6th, 1863.
The country being new where they lived in early life, destitute of church houses, preachers frequently held services in their house. For fifty years she was a teacher in the Sabbath School, she and her husband superintending much of the time.
The three sons and the two sons' families will feel the loss most deeply, yet the church at Bethel and the community as well, will share in the loss. One by one the links that bind us to the past are being broken. Who will take their place ? Who carry on their work ? We look to the young with expectancy.
The funeral was held at Bethel the 13th, the Rev. E. Harper conducting. A large audience came to show their respect for a good woman. The hymns to be sung and text of scripture were selected by the deceased. The body was laid to rest in the Minert graveyard beside her husband and two children.
