In St. Paul, Minn., May 31st., 1898, Matilda Johnson, in the 87th year of her age.
Matilda Swope was born in Union, Monroe county, (now) West Virginia, Sept. 17th, 1811, where she was married to Thomas Johnson, in her twentieth year. Soon after marriage they moved to Madison Co., Ind., until 1853 when they moved to this vicinity and bought what is now known as the Molthrop place northwest of Hardin. She also lived for several years on the Easton farm west of Postville. She was the mother of six sons and five daughters, her two eldest sons were Union soldiers in the Civil war. Since her husbands death in 1864, Mrs. Johnson has lived with her younger sons, three of whom with four daughters survive her.
The mortal remains of this mother in Isreal were borne to their last resting place at her husbands side by many of her long-time friends and neighbors. Among the bearers were: Jas. Orr, W. H. Dawson, W. H. Dunning, W. I. Chase, A. R. Prescott, and M. Y. McMaster.
