Corporal Casey Dead - Soldier Well Known in Dubuque Died at Fort McPherson
Corporal John Casey who was one of the men who assisted Lieut. Hart when the latter conducted the recruiting office here, died at Fort McPherson, Ga., at 10 o'clock Saturday night. Corporal Casey made many friends during his stay in Dubuque and the announcement of his death will occasion much regret. A special from Harpers Ferry, the home of the deceased, says:On Sunday morning a telegram was received here from Fort McPherson, Ga., containing the sad intelligence that John Casey of Company I, Forth-ninth Iowa Volunteers, had died in the hospital there at 10 p.m. Saturday. Prior to entering the army, Mr. Casey was one of Allamakee county's best school teachers and was well known and highly respected.
After being mustered into the government service he spent considerable time n the recruiting office in Dubuque and when the regiment was filled, joined his company at Jacksonville, but was soon afterwards taken down by the fever. At first it was hoped he would come out all right, but as he had to be moved several times before he was fully recovered, he suffered a relapse each time.
About a month ago his sister went down to help take care of him and render what comfort a kind heart and generous hand could bestow, but of no avail. After suffering nearly seven months, he yielded up his soul to Him Who gave it as a sacrifice on the altar of liberty for the nation he loved so well.
Interment will take place in Waukon cemetery, where Company I will pay their last respect to their beloved comrade.
The Casey family during their short residence here have gained the confidence and respect of all, and all unite in extending condolence and sympathy to them in their sad bereavement. The funeral will be held Thursday.
