Glen R. Bente

Glen Richard Bente, son of Glenn Frederick and Florence (Doeppke) Bente, was born October 16, 1946 at Elkader, Iowa. He died Monday, December 5, 1994 at his home in Clayton County, south of Postville, Iowa. He was 48 years old.

He was baptized in 1946 in the Zion Lutheran Church at Clayton Center, Iowa and confirmed in 1960 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. He graduated from Postville High School in 1965 and Iowa State University at Ames in 1969 with a degree in Animal Science. Glen served in the U. S. Army from 1970 to 1972.

On June 1, 1968 he was married to Rita Kay Torkelson in the Norway Lutheran Church at St. Olaf, Iowa by Rev. Robert Henriksen. To this union 3 children were born.

The family lived in Decorah, Ames and the Luana and Postville areas, as well as in Oklahoma and Germany while Glen was serving in the armed forces. In 1977 they moved to the Bente family farm south of Postville. Glen loved to hunt, fish and snowmobile. Glen was also active in 4-H as a youth. He served on the Gunder Cooperative Cheese Factory Board of Directors and was president for several years. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and the AMVETS in Monona. He was also a member of the Clayton County Snowmobile Club at Farmersburg.

He is preceded in death by a son, Greg Morris Bente.

Surviving is his wife, Rita, a son, Richard Bente, of rural Postville, a daughter, Annette Bente of Spokane, Washington, a granddaughter, Ashley Bente, his parents, Glenn F. and Florence Bente of Postville, his wife's parents, Quentin and Rube Torkelson of Farmersburg, and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, December 9, 1994 in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Charles W. Miller officiated. The organist was Joann Martins and the soloist was Ronald Meyer. Casket bearers were Lee Stence, David Reierson, Dan Donlon, Jim Farmer, Richard Herzman, Maurice Landsgard. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.
