C. W. Meier, 87, Retired Merchant, Passes On Tuesday. Had Been Council Member, Chuch And Bank Official And Businessman.

C. W. Meier, for many years an active and highly respected business man and civic leader of this community, passed away Tuesday morning at his home following an illness of several weeks. He was 87 years old, and since 1883 had been a resident of Post township and here in Postville.

Mr. Meier was born in Clayton county 14 May 1850, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Christian J. Meier. He attended school in Farmersburg township and at National. On 8 Sept. 1871, he married Miss Louisa Hedeman, and to them six children were born, of whom the following survive: Mrs. F. L. Eaton of Bellflower, CA; Chris F. Meier of Miles City, MT; Mrs. A. J. Phillips, George J. Meier and Miss Irene Meier, all of Postville. Mrs. Meier passed away in 1914, and one son, Wilbert, in 1893. Mr. Meier is also survived by two brothers, Charles of Monona, and August L. of Postville, and ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Mr. Meier farmed for many years in Clayton and Allamakee counties until renting his farm and moving to Postville, where he was engaged in business, and also in Farmersburg. His general store in Postville is now being conducted by his son, George, and daughter, Irene.

He served on the Postville town council from 1912 to 1922, was a bank director and was on the council of St. Paul's Lutheran church. He also served as a trustee and constable of Post township for several terms. Fraternally he was a member of the Masonic lodge at Farmersburg.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 3:00 at the Lutheran church, Rev. R. F. Galloway officiating, the Masonic lodge conducting services at the grave. Interment in the family plot in Postville cemetery.
