Died, at his home in Forest Mills, Iowa, after a very painful illness of nearly eight months, his trouble being that of a cancer, Henry W. Werhan, at the age of 55 years, 6 months and 2 days.

Henry Werhan was born in Cook county, Ill., Feb. 24, 1858, and when a little boy moved with his parents to what is now known as Forest Mills, then a dense wilderness, and which place has since been his home.

He was a very industrious, honest, upright, kind-hearted man, especially dear to those who knew him best, always ready to help those in need, always of a kind, pleasant disposition, he won for himself many dear friends, who will sadly miss him in the community in which he lived.

He was of a family of nine children, seven boys and two girls, four brothers, one sister, with his father and mother preceded him to the world beyond.

Those remaining to mourn his loss are P.J. Werhan of Waukon, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Beucher of Cresco, Iowa; and W.J. Werhan of Culver, Kansas, besides numerous other relatives, an intended wife, and hosts of friends.

Both brothers, the sister and the wife-to-be being present at his bedside during his last illness, ministering to his wants and doing all that loving, tender hands could do for him, procuring the best physicians, doing everything human power could do, till death came to his relief Aug. 26, 1908.

Death is sad at all times but doubly so when the subject is stricken down in the prime of life with so bright a future before him. He lived a good life, faithful to his God, and to the church, being a regular attendant of the little church near his home which was but recently built under his own careful supervision. Most of the material being sawed in his mills, and by his own labor and donated by him for the building of the church.

Funeral services were held from the church Saturday at 11 o'clock a.m., services being conducted by Rev. H. Williams of McGregor, and the remains laid to rest in the family lot in the Rossville cemetery.

The funeral cortege was one of the largest ever known at that place, attesting amply to the esteem in which he was held. And thus we say farewell to one whom we trust is --

Safe in the arms of Jesus,
Safe on his gentle breast,
There by his love o'er shadowed
Sweetly thy soul shall rest.
