Postville Graphic, Thur., 25 Aug. 1898.

Shot Himself.

About 8 o'clock Saturday morning Henry Brandt was up town, made some purchases of hardware which he carried down to his blacksmith shop, then proceeded to the home his father, south of town. He walked through the house, enquired if his father had gone to Omaha, then passing into a small side room sat down on a lounge, drew a revolver from his hip pocket, pressed it against his right temple, pulled the trigger and fell over on the floor, dead. The motive for this rash act is a matter of conjecture only, and who is there among men who will presume to be his judge ?

Henry was born in Grand Meadow township, where most of his life was spent. He was a blacksmith by trade, and for several years has run the shop in the Marston building. He was quick, impulsive, energetic and industrious, and rarely away from his shop during business hours. In 1889 he was married to Miss Mary Harnack, whom he has left with two children, aged 9 and 2 years. Coroner Scholz, of Guttenberg, was notified of the occurence, and on his arrival a jury was impaneled who returned a verdict in accordance with the facts, that deceased "died by his own hand. Motive unknown." The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon in presence of a large concourse of freinds of the family.

Henry was but 29 years of age, a member of Oak Camp, M.W. of A., the teachings of which order are charity and bene(?)cence toward the family of a fallen neighbor and respect for what ever good there may have been in his character.
