Willis Mason, age 85, of Waukon, died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at his home in Waukon. Family graveside services with military rites were held at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Willis Eugene Mason was born November 14, 1917, in Waukon, the son of Guy Hampton and Elva Louise (Gluck) Mason. He graduated from Waukon High School in 1936 and worked for his father at Pioneer Auto Company in Waukon. During World War II, he worked as a welder and for defense plants in Dubuque, Iowa and Seattle, Wash. From 1945 to 1947, he served in the U.S. Army, Following the service, he returned to Waukon where he did some livestock trucking for Rath Packing Plant and farmed near Rossville for a number of years. After his farming, he spent ten years in Hawaii before retiring to Waukon.Gene had a variety of interests. He enjoyed traveling and visited numerous places throughout the world. He was an avid reader of very diverse topics, including ships, trains, astronomy, mythology, and travel. He also liked to study maps and knew geography extremely well. Survivors include two brothers, Keith Mason and Guy Jr. "Bud" Mason, and a aunt, Marie Gluck, all of Waukon, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
