Postville Review, Apr. 13, 1917.

Walter Chriss was born in Christiania, Norway, Sept. 20, 1857 and died at Los Angeles, Cal., Apr. 5, 1917, of acute septicemia, after an illness of twelve days.

In 1871, at the age of fourteen, he came to America with his mother, and settled near Monona, his father having preceded them to this country the year before.

In 1873 he came to Postville where he was employed at the Ward & Meyer store, afterwards accepting a clerkship at the Roberts store which position he held for fourteen years.

In 1887 he went into the furniture business in Postville which he conducted for a couple of years, after which he accepted a position as travelling salesman with a furniture company and served in that capacity for twelve years. On account of his health he quit the road and bought a furniture business at Clinton which he conducted for two years and a half, disposing of this enterprise he bought a similar business in Cedar Rapids which he conducted for eight months. Retiring from active life he has since made his home at Chicago and postville and in company of his wife was enjoying the beauties of a California winter when the final illness came.

On November 25, 1879 he was united in marriage with Lucy E. Lull, who survives him. He has three half sisters who reside in Norway.

Fraternally he was connected with the Masonic lodge at Clinton and was also a member of the B.P.O.E.

It is with sorrow that we are called upon to chronical the death of our friend and neighbor who has always at all times been so willing to help all who were sick or in distress. It is by these acts of kindness and his kind genial disposition that we shall remember him. He was a man of unusually good character and was held in high esteem by all who knew him.

The funeral was conducted at their home in this city yesterday afternoon, Rev. Phillips officiating, assisted by Rev. Childress. Favorite Hymns were sang by Mrs. H. Shepherd and Miss Yates. Interment in Postville cemetery. All business houses were closed during the services.

The family wish to extend their thanks to their many friends and neighbors for their many acts of kindness during their bereavement.
